Piedmont High School football has quietly surged upward the past two seasons. After going 10-3 in 2019 and appearing in the state semifinal game in 2019, the Wildcats had back-to-back five-win seasons in ‘20 and ‘21, making a first-round exit the latter of those two years. In 2022, Piedmont rallied to an 8-5 record, defeating Midwest City in the first round and dropping a loss to McAlester in the second round. In ‘23, the Wildcats started 5-0 and went 7-4 (running into an undefeated Elgin team that had put at least 42 points on just about everybody in the first round and battling to a 20-0 loss). They have already secured
wins against Midwest City and El Reno this year with losses only to 6A-I Norman and a Choctaw team that has only lost three district games over the past half-decade (two of them to Bixby).
“We will be in our first year in 6A-II,” Piedmont head coach Jeff Hall told VYPE before the season. “We bring back five starters on each side of the ball. We will be relatively inexperienced but make up with that overall athletic ability.” Junior quarterback Grayson May has been excellent in his debut season taking command of the Wildcats’ flexbone triple option offense. The 6-foot-3, 186-pound bruiser accounted for all four touchdowns in a 27-14 win against El Reno, including a 40-yard touchdown pass. “Grayson is a great young man that goes the extra mile to make sure all his teammates are included,” Hall said. “Hehas paid his dues as a backup and is ready to take over as the starting quarterback.” In a 56-40 shootout against Choctaw, May dueled to a 28-28 tie at the half and connected on a fourth-down touchdown pass to Jonte Holt in the third quarter.”
Lineman like Scottie Logan (6- 2, 300, Jr.) and Cooper Bunce (6-0, 250, Jr.) have paved the way for May and the backfield. Jayden Fuston, a four-year starter and the team’s 170-pound feature back, has had a stellar senior year. Through four games, he had 456 yards on the ground for a 5.2-yard average. “Jayden is a four-year starter for us on some really good teams,” Hall said. “He is dynamic and very tough to tackle. He has exceptional speed and is one of the strongest athletes on our football team.” The Wildcats’ docket will go through Northwest Classen, U.S. Grant, Lawton Eisenhower and Southmoore the next four weeks — teams that owned a combined 8-32 record last year. On Week 9, the Wildcats will travel to Stillwater on Thursday night for a test with the defending 6A-II runners-up before closing out the season at home against Putnam City on Week 10.
