Swim builds discipline. Troy Brooks, a junior at Piedmont High School, says this is what he likes most about his sport.
“Swim is a sport where progress is directly tied to the work you put in,” says Brooks, “seeing that improvement over time is really rewarding.”
Brooks is honored to wear the PHS colors, competing for something bigger than himself. He has learned lessons as a junior at Piedmont High School to be used throughout life. Consistency, mental toughness and time management are all skills learned through swim.
“Showing up every day and pushing through hard practices has helped me stay focused and disciplined in school and other areas of life,” Brooks said. “I love the accountability and support that comes with being on a team. Everyone is working toward the same goal and knowing your teammates are counting on you pushes you to be better,” Brooks said.
Several teammates have made an impact on him. Beckham Shields, Owen McCaul and Ashton Harris all have tenacity and humility. These are qualities Brooks admires in his teammates.
Brooks’ passion for swimming comes from the challenge, both physical and mental. It is about more than just racing, he says; it is about constantly trying to improve oneself.
His parents are big supporters in his life. Whether it is sports or academics, they are there for him. It was his mom who first encouraged him to swim in high school.
“She thought I would do well,” Brooks said.
He thanks his coaches, teammates and family for their constant support and pushing him to improve, even when things got tough. He will always remember the team meets and gatherings with everyone together having a good time. These are the memories he likes most about swim.
“Control what you can control and trust the process” is advice that has helped him work toward his life goals.
Even on vacation, Brooks finds himself in the water. His most memorable time was on a scuba diving trip because he loves the ocean. He also enjoys working out, playing music, going to church and staying active through his other sports, football and track.
