Piedmont’s Sophie Whittern – Golf Spotlight – Presented by F&M Bank

Piedmont’s Sophie Whittern

Golf is a sport where the participant never stops working on their game. The same can be said for Piedmont High School’s Sophie Whittern. Now in her second full season as a varsity golfer, Whittern said she has worked on all aspects of the game coming into the new season.

“I have been working on being consistent with all my shots whether that be putting, chipping, or just my long game/range,” said Whittern.

The sophomore started playing the game during the summer before she started ninth grade. She was immediately hooked and even has a favorite place to play.

“I like to play at the Kickingbird Golf Course because the course is in nice condition, and it is not the easiest course, so you always have to think and put some effort into your shots,” said Whittern.

Being a member of the varsity team at PHS has been a great experience for Whittern and she loves being around her teammates.

“I love that they are always supportive of me. Whether or not me or my teammates and I play well, we are always picking each other up and helping each other out on the course,” said Whittern.

Whittern said she is inspired by her father and one day hopes to compete at the collegiate level.

“My dad inspires me on and off the course. He is always helping me with anything I need, always takes time out of his day to help me with my golf game and makes me the best I can be,” Whittern said. “My plans after I graduate high school are to continue my golfing career and go to college to get my business degree.”
