Piedmont’s Ava Watkins – Character Counts Presented by Eskridge Honda

For Piedmont senior Ava Watkins, basketball is more than a sport. It’s a calling, a community, and a place where her character shines. Head coach Joe Crawford sees that clearly.

“Ava is a natural leader. She is a 5’11 player that can post, shoot the three, and finish off the drive. She is the glue that keeps the team together.”

Ava’s basketball journey began in third grade, inspired by watching her older sister.

“My big sister played and I wanted to be like her,” she said.

She also played volleyball until her freshman year, believing it strengthened her communication, an essential skill she now brings to the court. One of Ava’s favorite memories as a Piedmont Wildcat is deeply personal.

“My favorite memory from competing for my high school team is getting to compete with two of my sisters.”

That sense of family extends to her teammates as well.

“My teammates are the ones that get me through the long practices and games. We are all always ready to pick each other up whenever it is needed, and there is always someone ready to make me laugh.”

Faith and gratitude steady Ava’s mindset in both practices and games.

“Knowing that it is a gift from God to have the opportunity to play this game motivates me to work my hardest at all times. Colossians 3:23.”

Her pregame routine reflects that same spirit: “I listen to worship music and stretch a lot.”

Discipline also plays a key role in her approach to life.

“I believe that discipline is important in everything you do,” Ava shared. “You’re not always going to want to do something, but the results you want come from the days you have discipline and do what you don’t want to do.”

Her parents remain her greatest role models who have taught valuable lessons.

“I have learned to be tough through hard times, and to enjoy every moment because it goes by fast.”

That foundation has shaped her leadership, both on the court and as a third-year member of the student council. Among her many accomplishments, scoring 24 points in the final game of her sophomore season stands out. Yet despite her success, Ava remains grounded. She believes her friends and family would describe her as “joyful, loving, and a leader.”

After graduation, Ava will continue her basketball journey.

“I am committed to Northwestern Oklahoma State University to play basketball. I plan to major in nursing to eventually become a pediatric nurse.”

Whether competing, encouraging teammates, or enjoying a post-game smoothie, Ava carries herself with gratitude, purpose, and unwavering character which are qualities that truly make her the glue of Piedmont Lady Wildcats team.
